Golden Week!!
Today, Japan officially welcomes Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク), marking the start of the year's most vibrant and eagerly awaited consecutive holidays across the nation.
The origin of Golden Week dates back to the early 1950s. At that time, the Japanese film industry noticed that from late April to early May, due to consecutive holidays, people spent more time out, leading to a significant surge in movie theater box office revenue. To describe this "golden period," the film company Daiei Film, inspired by the term "Golden Time" commonly used in the broadcasting industry, coined the term "Golden Week" for promotional purposes.
Over time, the term quickly gained popularity, becoming a household seasonal phrase and establishing itself as one of Japan's most significant holiday periods.
Golden Week is a long holiday because several national holidays fall within this period:
- April 29: Showa Day (commemorating Emperor Showa)
- May 3: Constitution Memorial Day (celebrating the enactment of Japan's new constitution)
- May 4: Greenery Day (expressing gratitude for nature's blessings)
- May 5: Children's Day (praying for children's healthy growth)
Combined with weekends and additional days off arranged by some companies, many people enjoy a holiday lasting seven days or more. Whether it's domestic travel, visiting family and friends, or simply slowing down, this is a crucial time for Japanese people to recharge.
Notably, during the latter half of this year's Golden Week, temperatures are expected to rise significantly in many parts of Japan, with daytime temperatures in some areas potentially approaching or exceeding 30°C. For those planning outdoor travel or activities, please take precautions such as sun protection, heatstroke prevention, staying hydrated, and scheduling breaks to ensure a safe and comfortable journey.
Golden Week is more than just a series of holidays; it's a time to feel the transition of Japan's seasons and a shift in mood, making it one of the most significant periods of the year.
Wishing everyone a safe, exciting, and memorable Golden Week filled with cherished moments!
